The History of Dave Steel
Founded before the Great Depression, Dave Steel Company has been in continuous operation since 1929. At first, the company consisted of a single warehouse with all fabrication being performed in an open lot. During its formative years, there were no hydraulic punches, no cranes, no CNC or heavy equipment.
Sustained by small bridge work and the needs of local businesses, the company grew with Western North Carolina. Its first major project came with the construction of the American Enka plant in 1932, now BASF. After this, an increasing number of large and small contractors began relying on Dave Steel Company to furnish structural steel for the construction projects. With the onset of World War II, Dave Steel Company took part in the armament of the nation. The plant was retooled for use in the construction of LSM’s (Landing Ship Medium). It was on one of these LSM’s that General Douglas McArthur landed at Luzon in the Philippines. For its work during the war years, the company received the Army-Navy “E” in both 1944 and 1945. This effort to up-date Dave Steel Company resulted in a fabrication company that can now process more volume and heavier projects, but also in a more efficient manner while maintaining the high quality of our product.
